WELCOME TO ASPEX We would like to welcome you aspex, Portsmouth's leading contemporary art gallery. We invite you to explore innovative, contemporary visual art with exhibitions, workshops and events hosted at our inspiring home in the Vulcan Building, a former naval storehouse on the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays. Here you will find the work of artists from Portsmouth presented alongside internationally recognised names. aspex specialises in supporting contemporary artists at an early stage in their career and is a showcase for new work being made at a regional, national and international level. When we use the term ‘contemporary art’, we mean new work by living artists.  Artists working today use an enormous variety of techniques, including many that might not even be thought of as being ‘art’ in the traditional sense of painting or sculpture. You can expect to see this variety of approaches reflected in the diverse and ever changing programme of exhibitions at aspex as contemporary artists try to create new ways of experiencing the world.  The main gallery shows five temporary exhibitions a year, which is complemented by the fast changing programme in the intro project space adjacent to the cafe. The shop also showcases the best of contemporary crafts with monthly changing displays in its podium cases. Talks and other events are organised in response to the exhibition programme, while arc events are organised for artists and designer/makers. For busy parents looking for ways to entertain and stimulate their children we have our education programme. Artist-led workshops are held regularly for a variety of age groups giving children an opportunity to have fun and try out new techniques. Our lively programmes ensure that there is something new to see or do each time you call in. aspex provides a fantastic environment to take time out to discover contemporary art, to learn, to think differently, to try something new, or just relax.
