arc awards 2009

This year arc is calling for submissions for applications from fine artists and designer makers for two awards. Please see the guidelines below for further details.

Guidelines for Applicants

The arc awards of £1,500 will be given to one fine artist and one designer maker, to develop new work, culminating in solo showcases at aspex, with ongoing support from the arc co-ordinator.

Eligibility

Applicants for the fine art award must:

  • be a practising contemporary artist
  • have completed an undergraduate programme of study
  • be living or working in the South East region

Applicants for the designer maker award must:

  • have set up and be running a contemporary craft practice
  • have completed an undergraduate programme of study
  • be living or working in the South East region

Please note: When deciding for which award you are eligible, please bear in mind that we are looking for practitioners who wish to push the boundaries of their medium/practice.

Assessment of applications

Applicants must demonstrate how they would use the award and the assistance provided to develop a new body of work, reach or explore new markets and context for their work and develop their practice in the longer term. Quality of making, strength of personal voice and originality will also be considered when assessing applications.

Award terms and benefits

  • The awards run over a period agreed with the arc co-ordinator, up to 12 months

  • The recipient will co-operate with aspex, keep records and receipts of expenditure relating to the award; meet regularly as agreed with the arc co-ordinator

  • At the end of the period the recipient will write a short report detailing the outcomes and developments to their practice

  • The recipient will give a short talk to arc clients as part of the arc professional development programme at aspex as agreed with the arc co-ordinator

Application procedure

Please apply with:

  • A supporting statement no longer than 1 side of A4 demonstrating how the award will be used, outlining ideas for new work, new markets, context for work and how this opportunity might develop your practice in the longer term

  • An up to date CV and artist’s statement

  • 6 images of work made in the last 12 months in jpeg files

Deadline for applications is Saturday 28 February

The selection panel will comprise of:

  • arc co-ordinator

  • a member of the aspex exhibitions team

Short listed candidates who attend a selection interview will be asked to elaborate on their supporting statement and proposed use of the £1500 award. Interviews will take place at aspex in mid March.
