Observations of daily life inspire Cornelia Baltes’ work, placing great value in small details and seemingly insignificant incidents. Baltes’ work occupies a crossroads where painting, photography and sculpture are combined with successful, surprising and occasionally cheeky results. will present a series of newly commissioned works alongside some existing pieces in what will be the artist’s largest solo show to date.

Baltes employs traditional and digital techniques, frequently using bright colours and bold gestures, discarding anything she deems unnecessary or which may distract or confuse. What remains is minimal, playful and direct. The apparent sense of urgency suggesting that the event or idea was catured at the very moment it occurred, and when a canvas or camera are not available then the gallery itself becomes part of the artwork.

Cornelia Baltes recently graduated with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art. Born in Germany and now based in London and Cologne, Baltes initially trained and worked in media design before seeking greater creative freedom. She was shortlisted for the John Moores Paining Prize in 2010, and her work appeared in the 2011 Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition.
