ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Gallery2
Femmy Otten
4 August - 12 September 2010

Reception & talk: Wednesday 18 August, 6pm

Femmy’s work featured in EMERGENCY4aspex’s biennial open submission exhibition shown at the end of 2009. We were so enchanted by the artist and her work that we were keen to invite her back as our artist in residence.

Femmy creates temporal reliefs by means of painting, drawing and sculpture, employing a slow and labour intensive process of applying plaster, carving and sculpting forms directly onto walls.

Drawing upon ancient and contemporary iconography and self-portrait, Femmy constructs landscapes where death and the ephemeral meet with humorous and fairytale like consequences.

During her stay, until the 21 August, Femmy will be working in gallery 2, making new work and providing a fascinating insight into the development of ideas from the artist’s imagination to the walls of the gallery. The resulting work will continue to be displayed through to the 12 September.

Femmy was born in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and is currently a Laureate at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Ghent. Over the past seven years she has exhibited extensively throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.

Femmy Otten’s residency was part-funded by the European Union through the Interreg IV A ’Two Seas Programme’.
