6 January - 29 January 2012
aspex is more than Portsmouth's leading contemporary art gallery - it's developing into a space fr questions, creating conversations and cultivating connections. But how does an organisation convey to the outside world what it is and what it wants to become?

Established by artists in 1981 plans to undertake a shift, with its programme focused on an overarching question, where all activities - from exhibitions to seminars, from participatory events to how the cafe works - contribute to a conversation with visitors and provodes opportunities for its audience to get more involved and join in.

To help communicate this sihift in thinking asked three designers - CHK Design, Red Design & Studio Baum to look at the organisation’s identity and suggest ways of refreshing it to indicate this change of direction, without necessitating a wholesale redesign that might sever links with the gallery’s past successes over the last 30 years.

In the spirit of the new programme ethos has decided to expose a process that would normally be private, between client and designer to its audience, enabling a conversation to take place about what it is to develop an organisation’s identity. This will take the form of an exhibition, the publication of a piece of print, and a series of events.

All three designers were given the same brief and asked to work up their ideas for refreshing brand, together with the design for a small piece of print (an A4 double-sided leaflet) for January - April 2012 programme.

Visit to see how the designers propose to transform its identity/brand in the exhibition. All three leaflet designs will be printed and distributed throughout the region, inviting people to enter into the conversation surrounding the gallery’s new direction. An event at the end of January will bring all the designers together to talk about their concepts and discuss the thinking and rationale behind their designs.
