PAPER CUTS
Gallery2
Eileen White, Heather Weston, Lucy May Schofield, Tracey Bush, Tracey Kendall
12 March - 13 April 2008

Paper Cuts is an exhibition of works by five makers and designers, established and emerging, who use paper in innovative ways. Featuring limited edition paper cuts, bespoke wallpapers and artist books.

Tracey Bush showcases the piece ‘Moths of the Night’ from her butterfly series. The butterflies are carefully cut by hand and pinned within a frame like a display collection. But instead of collecting groups of insect specimens, she is displaying letters, stamps, maps and other paper ephemera. Is her work book art or archiving?

Tracy Kendall creates new and innovative wallpapers using hand techniques and modern technology to expand the vocabulary of possibilities for wall coverings. The wallpapers often take their starting points from elements already within a room or space. Each piece conveys a strong design concept which interacts with the interior’s identity, but without dominating it. In this exhibition Tracy Kendall displays three of her bespoke wallpapers.

Lucy May Schofield makes books to house stories, which would otherwise go untold. Creating visual narratives to take the viewer on a journey through an honest, often intimate recollection, a memory or a feeling. Themes explored include lost love, liberation, salvaged diaries, dementia, solitude, proverbs, redundant underwear, beards; the domestic to the divine.

Heather Weston uses the book form to tell physical, narrative and conceptual stories. Central to her approach to this medium is the marriage of form and content, where form tells just as crucial a story as the words do. Both are brought together to build a narrative that is more than the sum of its parts. Weston has a curiousity about psychological and emotional life and the recognition of the need to tell ones story. Heather Weston also makes unique contemporary stationary which is produced under the banner of ‘Bookery’. These are available to purchase in shop.

Eileen White produces limited edition paper cuts. Her work is a culmination of experiences, travels, education and an appreciation for the little things in life. Using household paint, pattern, positive/negative space, shape and repetition to transform something ordinary into something beautiful. All her work is created from her own original sketches and designs which are transferred onto hand-painted paper. This is then cut with a scalpel and stitched.
