Artist Support

Above: Mini Conference: ‘Participatory Art and Social Practice’, October 2011

aspex supports emerging artists in Portsmouth and beyond through a programme of artist focused activities, including one to one surgeries, workshops and symposia. We aim to encourage critical engagement, self assessment and a proactive approach.

One to One Surgeries

One to one surgeries are free 45 minute bookable sessions with our Artist Advisor Jonathan Parsons. Artists can use these sessions to get critical feedback on work or to discuss any aspect of career development, fundraising, presenting work, making proposals or specific projects. To book a one to one surgery please email a request to jonathan@aspex.org.uk. You should provide a brief summary of what you would like to discuss together with a current CV, artist’s statement and 4 jpeg images of your work.

How To Submit Work to Aspex

aspex regularly invites artists, designers and makers to submit work for specific events or awards. Please join our the Aspex Artists Mailing List here to ensure you receive this information.

We do also accept unsolicited submissions of work, which are viewed by the Programming Team on a regular basis. However, due to the volume of work we receive we cannot guarantee a response to every one.

General Guidelines for Submissions

Submissions will be accepted via post and/ or email.

It is advised that anyone submitting material to make themselves aware of the gallery and its work.

It is important to have an appreciation of the nature of the programme and a familiarity with the physical exhibition spaces, ideally through visiting the gallery.

Material must be kept short and concise, and include a cover letter, CV and up to five images.

Please ensure that all supporting material in digital format is Mac compatible (preferred formats are jpegs, tiffs, mov, avi, mp3 and wave).

Where return postage & packing has not been supplied, supporting material will be discarded.

Prior to submission we also recommend discussing any proposal you may have for aspex or any other gallery with an artists’ advisor at or at one of our partner organisations throughout the South East.
