WHERE IS THE WORK?
Cornford & Cross

24 February - 22 April 2007

Matthew Cornford and David Cross have worked together since meeting at St Martins School of Art in 1987. Since that time they have created a unique body of work made both in the public realm and for galleries. In the main, their way of working has been to respond to a particular context or situation, by examining the problems that arise out of it. Accordingly, each of their projects has been radically different, not only in form but in function. Equally, the artists have not worked in a single media, but produced sculpture and installations, worked with video and photography, and created one-off events and sound works. This exhibition brings together the artists' full range of works for the first time, alongside profiling their unrealised projects. The latter take the form of invited or speculative proposals for particular sites.

Cornford & Cross have worked on the development of a new installation for aspex inspired by the history of the gallery's new home, a former naval storehouse.  Titled Fire Down Below the work reveals the hidden geometry of one of the magnificent doorways of the historic Vulcan Building. The installation highlights the Golden Section within the doorway, and symbolically connects the gallery with the world outside.

Also, to coincide with the exhibition, Cornford & Cross have launched their new website, www.cornfordandcross.com. Designed by Prachya Compiranont, the site showcases the complete range of Cornford & Cross’ projects since 1991, and offers viewers a unique insight into their working methods and wider practice.

Where is the Work? is the second of three distinct exhibitions of Cornford & Cross’ work originated by the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, which hosted the first exhibition in 2006. The third will be shown at Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzance later this year. The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England, University of the Arts, London and the University of Wolverhampton.
