Throwing Rings
Sue Paraskeva
12 January - 17 February 2008This January aspex presented an installation of new work by potter Sue Paraskeva. As the first recipient of the arc Craft Award, Sue Paraskeva has been awarded £1,000 to develop new work and have the opportunity to present her work at aspex.
Sue Paraskeva works with porcelain and uses a stick driven momentum wheel to create fine cylindrical forms. In the ceramic world this technique is used widely in Jingdezhen – the Chinese capital of Porcelain. The momentum wheel allows Sue to work silently and without electricity in tune with the spin of the wheel. Making pots is a very physical process and what Sue has created for 'Throwing Rings' is pushing the boundaries of her art.
Paraskeva explains, “I cut the form, removing the base and rejoining to form sculptures. Some of these pieces are then glazed inside and all work is reduction fired to 1260oC which gives the work its strength and subtle depth of colour. The individual sculptures were attached to the wall at aspex to form a larger installation using a steel rod.
