Tender Vessels
Cathy Ward & Eric Wright
18 April - 14 June 2009The visual languages of folklore and popular cultural iconography are explored in a new exhibition by artists Cathy Ward and Eric Wright, who won EMERGENCY3, aspex’s biennial open submission competition.
The large-scale installation of new works, entitled Tender Vessels, also explores primitive spiritualism and the dark reality of idealistic pursuits through a range of cultures. Throughout their collaborative practice, they have drawn on folklore and popular iconography and in Tender Vessels they have transformed the over-arching themes of their influences into a singular and distinct visual language.
Tender Vessels explores the intersections between broad historical movements and intimate experiences. Through their installation of painting, film and sculpture, Ward & Wright are representing the 'vessels' that carry out the trade in the ambitions and desires of humanity.
Through the opportunity of winning Emergency3 in 2007 Cathy Ward and Eric Wright have been able to advance and extend their creative reach and it has enabled them to increase the ambition and scale of their work.
Cathy Ward and Eric Wright come from the UK and USA respectively, and met during the international arts residency programme at the Banff Centre in Canada. Their shared interests have seen them continue their collaborative practice alongside their individual work. They currently live and work in London.
