We are seeking artists working in all media for our open submission exhibition EMERGENCY. This is an international opportunity, seeking applications from anyone who considers themselves to be an emerging artist.
A maximum of ten artists will be selected for a group show, which will open in December 2017. During this exhibition a winner will be chosen to receive a solo exhibition at Aspex in 2018, as well as a fee of £1,000.
The selectors are: Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex; Lindsay Friend, Director IMT Gallery (Image Music Text); Cathy Lomax, Artist & Director Transition Gallery and Adam Sutherland, Director Grizedale Arts.
EMERGENCY was established in 2003, and each edition has provided an opportunity for the winner to realize a solo exhibition at the gallery. Previous winners include: Susan Collis (2003), Tim Machin (2005), Cathy Ward & Eric Wright (2007), Kihlberg & Henry (2009), Charlie Tweed (2011), Jim Howieson (2013) and Maya Ramsay (2015).
Artist David Blandy, who has now exhibited extensively worldwide, said:
“I first showed at Aspex in EMERGENCY, their open exhibition in 2003/4, alongside Juneau Projects and Susan Collis among others, and it was great to see my work in the context of their work. It gave me the confidence to keep pushing my practice, to keep trying to make a life as an artist, at a time when I was fresh out of art school and was still a few years away from my first solo show. This is a critical stage in any artist's career, a stage where being involved in a show like EMERGENCY at an important gallery like Aspex can persuade you it's worth persevering”.
Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex, said:
“EMERGENCY is a real highlight for Aspex, a chance to provide an excellent snapshot of emerging practice today. The selectors and I are looking forward to seeing a diverse and exciting range of work from those that submit to this opportunity”.
Deadline for submissions is Sunday 13 August 2017. For more information, please click here.
