Eye Sea Squares 20-20 | Celebration Event (Portsmouth Festivities)

Eye Sea Squares 20-20 | Celebration Event (Portsmouth Festivities)

23 Jun

Join us for the unveiling of Eye Sea Squares 20-20 - an artwork created by visually impaired artist Clarke Reynolds, working alongside schools and community groups in Portsmouth.

Clarke has been collaborating with people across the city to create a “tactile tapestry” inspired by the sounds of the sea and the communities interpretation of their hometown.

Clarke said:

“Eye Sea Squares 20-20 has encouraged visually impaired people to experience art in new ways through sound and touch. Creating the artworks have also enabled people with sight to consider how they interact with visual forms of art.”

Participating groups include: Ark Ayrton Primary, Arundel Court Primary, Cottage Grove Primary, Highbury College, Manor Infants & Nursery and Portsmouth Grammar School (schools); Make (Aldingbourne Trust, Havant), Making Space (Havant), LMS UK Portsmouth, Portsmouth Blind Association, Sense (Havant), The Hotwalls Studios, Old Portsmouth - and at Aspex at various participatory workshops.

Clarke is a Portsmouth-based artist who aims to challenge people’s perception of visual art through his sight-loss journey.

Clarke undertook a residency at Aspex in October/November 2018 and was subsequently nominated for the Best Visual Artist award at the The News Portsmouth’s Guide Awards. He is an active member of the gallery’s Artist Associate programme. Clarke is also due to have his first solo exhibition at Gosport’s Yellow Edge Gallery in September 2019.

This event forms part of Portsmouth Festivities - 10 days of events and activities capturing imaginations, celebrating diversity and exploring Portsmouth’s amazing heritage. CLICK HERE to see the full 2019 programme.
