Artist Showcase: Miesje Chafer
We are delighted to welcome textile designer, screen printer and maker Miesje Chafer to our Craft Space. Chafer is based in Southsea and works from her studio at The Sorting Office in Eastleigh.
Whilst working as a nurse in Oxford, Chafer experimented with screen printing at a three day course in London. Falling in love with the process, the artist joined the Oxford Printmakers Cooperative where she spent time developing her printing skills before moving her practice to her home.
From there, Chafer’s business has grown organically, taking part in fairs and markets, she met customers and stockists which has led the business to grow even further.
She is drawn to bright colours and combines these with her predominantly geometric designs to create products that are functional yet eye-catching and cheerful.
Her surface patterns are largely influenced by Scandinavian and mid-century design, but also by a love of repeated pattern.
The artist said:
“I am inspired by the desire to create things that are not only beautiful, but also functional and I strive to maintain a high level of quality across my whole range of products.”
The artist uses her printed textiles to produce a range of homewares and accessories including purses, cushions, lampshades, quilts, hairbands and fabric pots.
In addition to her product range, Chafer experiments with patchwork and quilting techniques, occasionally producing bespoke wall hangings.
This artist showcase is part of our ongoing support of local artists and makers. All of the maker's bespoke work is available to purchase in-house.
